Tips and advice

If you have questions about or would like further information on any of the points on this page, please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to help.

Packing your belongings….
If you have decided to use the CJS packing service, then there will be no need to worry yourself about this, as we will handle the packaging for you. However, if you are looking to do your own packing then you should make sure that the containers that you use are strong and are sealed correctly. Do not overfill them, making them too heavy to carry. i.e. if you have a load of books to pack, then maybe half fill the box with books and then top it up with lighter objects. If you are in any doubt, then contact your “Moves Co-ordinator” who will be able to advise you.

Self assembly furniture…..
You should disassemble any “self assembly” furniture before CJS arrive. We would advise that you take careful note of how the furniture came apart, as you will have to re-assemble it at the other end. If you do not have the original instructions, draw yourself a diagram as you take the furniture apart as you may need to refer to it later. It is often an idea to bag all fittings (screws, hinges etc) along with your instructions/drawing and keep them with the piece of furniture they belong to.

Attics and lofts……..
Make sure you give yourself ample time to retrieve the contents of your loft or attic. People are often surprised as to how much they have stored in their attics and as a result, need more time than originally planned to empty and pack everything. Make sure your attic is fully emptied and is ready for packing if you have arranged our packing service, or is packed and ready to be taken out by our team. Please note that our staff are not permitted to enter an attic unless the it has a safe entrance and is properly lit.

Moving into storage…..
If you are arranging for some of your belongings to go into storage, then make sure that you do not important items that you may unexpectedly need. It can work out quite expensive and time consuming to open containers to search for a passport, driving license or maybe insurance documents.

Kitchen appliances….
Cookers, fridges, freezers and washing machines should all be disconnected, drained and dried before we arrive on your move day. Washing machines are usually supplied with brackets which should be fitted to the drum so as to prevent damage. Make sure you thoroughly clean your fridge and freezer, they should also be dry before we arrive. Please note that we are unable to touch any mains supply.

Curtains, blinds and wall fittings….
All curtains, blinds and wall fittings (i.e. pictures, mirrors, lights etc) should be taken down before we arrive. Makes sure that they are stacked neatly rather than left on furniture as we may need to load the furniture first.

Hifi, TV, video and computer equipment….
This type of equipment should ideally be packed in its original packaging before we arrive. All precautions should be made as per the manufactures instructions, i.e. secure arm on record players. Ideally bag and mark all cabling appropriately, so as to make installation easier at your new home.

China, glass and ornaments…
If you are using our packing service, these items can be left on their shelves ready for our packing team, but please note that it is your responsibility to check your cupboards and shelves to make sure nothing has been left. If you are packing these items yourself, make sure that all delicate items are wrapped separately and packed safely into appropriate containers.

Foodstuffs….
Please note that food can not be taken into storage. Make sure all packets, jars, bottles etc and their lids are properly and safely secured.

Garage and shed contents….
Like the attic, it is very easy to misjudge how much is actually stored in your garage or shed, which is why we recommend that you clear it in plenty of time. Please note that we are unable to move or transport any flammable substances such as tins of paint, creosote, paraffin or gas bottles. Also that you safely dispose of any rubbish before we arrive.

Pets….
Please keep ALL pets away from our team. Moving can be a stressful time for pets as well, and it is easy for them to act irrationally during this time, especially as we are effectively coming into their territory. i.e. a dog or cat will in and around boxes and can decided to run out at any given moment which could of course cause accidents and maybe cause injury to you, us or even themselves. Also note that animals should ideally travel with the family.
